In research, probiotics are beginning to show the power they hold in preventing and treating diseases. Historically antibiotics have been used to treat infections, and there was never any discussion on the negative impacts they make. Antibiotics alter the diversity and quantity of bacteria in the gut, by preventing the development of certain strains. By changing the gut microbiome, the immunity of the body suffers. Over prescribing antibiotics can not only change the intestinal microbiome, but also result in antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is a public-health concern, because it impacts the ability to treat contagious bacterial diseases.

Therefore, it is important to only use antibiotics for bacterial infections, not viral. Probiotics can be used to restore the bacteria destroyed by antibiotics, and provide a natural defense for the body. Probiotics are generally recognized as safe and have been proven to be helpful in reducing duration and frequency of diarrhea, treating GI disorders, and enhancing the immune system. Cleveland Kraut is a fermented natural source of probiotics and can help to provide the healthy strains of bacteria in the gut. Give this Grilled Turkey and Sauerkraut Sandwich a try!
